When they said cardboard VR, I thought they meant...

A video demo of this would be nice.

I don't understand: why would anyone strap their phone to their face? What problem does this solve?

As the readme says,

No expensive headset. No cloud streaming. Just a phone, a cardboard viewer, and an arguably unreasonable amount of curiosity.

Even a cheap dedicated VR headset is hundreds of dollars. Cardboard is cheap.

it's useful on planes (that was my personal use case). also, privacy

AKA cheap eye destruction tool

useful on planes imo

sends ... in ... JPEG frames

uh-oh

I had a quick glance at source. Base64 and TCP? There's certainly room for a quicker protocol and delta streaming with adaptive bitrate. I reckon Fable could get that implemented quite fast.

Unity dependency seems required for cardboard vr? Is that library worth the bloat?

This was originally implemented wayyy before AI got good; I just never bothered to package it for HN until today.

Also, it was an excuse to learn Unity :P

A faster streaming protocol is definitely up next though

I mean...it isn't that bad. The actual limitation is the resolution of your smartphone screen
