I forward a handful of email addresses from my domains to gmail, this has worked for years, and I did set up SRS a couple of years ago to solve bouncing emails.
As far as I can make out, SRS is actually the solution to the forwarding problem that the linked article is complaining about. Yes, it is a pain to setup, but it is quite doable.
