This is literally the reason why I never liked advance wars. It's painfully slow (especially against a human) and you have to wait for every single unit move, and because I'm bad, I'm waiting to get crushed. Sometimes there are so many units. I'm ok with other tacticals, but mostly because it's alternating players (whereas advance-wars-likes just move all the units at once).

There's options for that. And on the new Switch version you can hold down a button to make the AI move faster...

Yes that's true, but that's not available against human players obviously :/

Note that Athena Crisis supports both sync and async play. You can play your turn against other people and only come back when they are done.

You can also play multiple games at once, and on as many devices as you like. So for example play a sync game on your desktop against a bot, and an async game against another person on your phone once in a while.
