I just want to comment on the "move into engineering management " but because I've seen it 2 or 3 times on this thread.
I've been in management for 6 years after 15 years as an IC and I still hate tech. Probably depends on the organization and the person, but being accountable for the work of others is stressful and draining as F.
I personally sometimes think about how relaxing it would be to just start the day, pick up a ticket, do it, and go home. But I know it's a "grass is greener" fantasy, being an IC comes with its own cross to bear.
