In my opinion aligning yourself too much with a particular 'counterculture' should be the domain of teenagers and those in their early-twenties. And that's fine: we're social creatures and we often need some help breaking out of the paradigms we grew up with.
But at some point one should learn to forge their own path, separate from any package of beliefs that comes with any 'culture'.
