What's missing from the article is what would have been if they put all that focus on excelling in the actual game design and technology. Looking at metacritic etc, Spyro is not in the top10 games of all time, perhaps because they didn't focus on getting the best product to the users?

User score: 8.8 Across 139 ratings ( + 127 | ~ 4 | - 8 )
Personally I remember the PS1 Spyro games to be really fun, critics and scores be damned.
It would probably have been 2% better, because they spent 2% of their programmer time on it.
