The MIT bot is around $20, however by replacing the Sparkfun Pro Mini with a clone you could save another $8 or so.

No, the article is correct. They did win in Software category. MIT team won in Hardware.

And MIT won in Curriculum. So out of the three MIT two firsts and a second, Harvard two seconds and a first. They didn't score an overall winner, I just extended the scoring to include that.
