I've been working as an independent software consultant for about 5 years now. I've found the best way to get work is via past contacts. For example, if you are really good at what you do, then all of your past supervisors / colleagues know it, and when they move on to other companies / jobs, they are your best bet for getting started. This cascading effect works to your advantage as you take on more projects and meet new people.
