I didn't mean that the commenters weren't real—sorry for the imprecision. We use the term "sockpuppet" rather loosely to include cases where people show up to comment only as part of a story they're trying to push. When a bunch of new accounts show up to do it at the same time, we ban them, because that's not a legit use of HN comments.
