If you can search by age,then why not gender? Both should have zero influence on your abilities, and yet it's ok to discriminate against one but not the other.
I can see your point, although your age can reflect your experience, whereas your gender provides no information about your ability.
I guess you could argue that for a company willing to be more diverse (like Google recently), it actually IS important to know people's gender for a kind of affirmative action.
