It's an Economist blog entry, not an official Economist article, so it doesn't get subedited. The whole prose style of the piece would be notably different once the subs were finished with it. The initial-letter monikers are a compromise between the anonymity of Economist articles, (almost) all written in the editorial voice, and the personal voices of the blog.
