I lost 2K this way many years ago. Didn't have a contract. I didn't get the money. It was like 2K or something. It felt bad but I got over it. Learned a lesson.

Another freelancer who was there bragged how he had a lawyer on retainer. I didn't get into freelancing much so don't know how good of an idea that is. Would love to hear best practices.
