Really interesting - this exploit could apply to any social app that tells you the distance between you and another user

Yes and no. The degree of precision matters a lot. "between 3-4 miles away" isn't the same as "3.42123459921 miles away". In this case, the distance field was encoded in a 64 bit double - which if fully utilized is a ridiculous degree of unnecessary precision.
