How many of these cool startups would be around without gnu/linux/freebsd?

They would be using Solaris, Aix, HP-UX, Tru64, VMS, Windows instead.

GNU is much more than an operating system. Cheap Intel hardware has just as much to do with it as free, quality OS and programs.

Remember how expensive it was to start an internet company in the 90s when you had to run Sun hardware, Oracle databases...Even developer hardware was expensive. $3,000 laptops vs today's $1,000 machines.

True, but you didn't need to go Sun/Oracle, there were other cheaper alternatives available.
