Another way to look at this, which is how I learned it in grad school, is that your goal is to tell a Story that others Believe. The Machievellian corollary is: whether the story itself represents reality is less important than whether you have people who believe in your story. When people believe in your story, you have power. You use that power to get funding, which gives you runway to work on real problems.
