Hell, why do so many people put up with taking jobs that require them to go to an office?

B/c remote workers are expected to be more productive. They have fewer opportunities for advancement + networking at the coffee pot or over lunch.

If you're a remote worker and most of the employees are working out of an office (or offices), then this is definitely true. It's a different story if the company culture is built around remote working.
