Some people don't like the Yoga, or XPS, just like some people don't like the Surface. This has always been Microsoft's game, let others make diverse hardware and make money on the software. This time, they're competing in the hardware game too, so far they haven't been too successful, but who knows what will happen.
Microsoft can take this risk because they see little chance that Dell, Lenovo, Sony, etc. will jump to only selling linux machine or Chrome devices. I don't necessarily agree with that mentality, I think Chrome could be more of a threat than they realise.
