Yup that gesture (swipe from the left hand side) switches between the active running apps (the desktop counts as one "app"). If you swipe slowly then you can dock the app to either side.

Right around the :57 mark the lady pulls an application in from the side. Is that possible/normal? I run W8.1 but only desktop, do not own a surface.
