When a story is breaking whatever discussion is getting traction likely will be the final. Neither of these are the sources which will likely get the most traction, so pick one of those instead:

I thought it was time based.

That's certainly an important factor but there are at least 2 others: (1) the quality of the link (some articles are better than others, and/or sometimes there is a canonical source for the story); and (2) randomness - we're usually working hastily and can only be consistent up to a point.
