Empirically, a lot of strong extended family & fictive kin systems suggest otherwise. If anything, atomization (weaker relationship bonds) go hand in hand with a lack of what I suspect you would call "abuse." Though I'm guessing you might call those strong bonds "unhealthy", as well?
