Funny I'm in Tokyo right now, in a central popular party tourist area. I just saw an all girls school with kids around 5-6 years old walk home alone after school.
Similarly, according to my mom, by the time I or my sisters were five we rode our bikes to school by ourselves. Granted, that was in a Dutch village with less than a thousand people, where everyone knew everyone by their first name, so it probably was one of the safest places in the world for children to ride bikes, but still.

It actually warmed my heart seeing little children walk home alone in central Tokyo. I hope people here never feel unsafe to do this.
Feeling safe enough to do this is an absolute blessing.
