Historically there is no reason why the US can't call a lake (owned by it or not) whatever it wants.
Other countries will call it what's most convenient (if there is an disagreement they side with whom they are allied or who is stronger in the conflict(Constantinople example)).
People trying to make this a big thing are playing mercenaries for whatever political party is pro or against this. I thing this is a stupid thing to do but making it more than it is wrong, when you have something like the Epstein files people conveniently don't talk about anymore.
