Sure, those are fair questions, but they've got nothing to do with the comment I was responding to, which was about the problems with reading (originally) epub books on a kindle.
It sounds like the comment you replied to is aware of that, but prefer his (sisters) kindle to remain functional with USB transfer, hence airplane mode to prevent any unwanted software updates.
