Looking at the population projections for the Balkans and surrounding countries like Hungary, things don't look great long term. Also Austria is afraid to make a statue of the polish king who saved Vienna from Ottomans in order to not hurt t the feelings of it's Turkish migrant population.

Turkey definitely wields a lot of soft power, both in European Turkish communities and in places like the Horn of Africa.
Becoming a hard power could backfire on them. Today, not even Russia and the US seem to be in a position to win their wars of choice.
