well, since Nitter stopped working I've stopped reading Twitter posts, it doesn't seem like much information value for me was lost, though especially now during Nepal floods it would be probably good source of videos, more difficult to skim through them on Reddit/4chan, if one is interested in videos of disasters
Self-hosted Nitter still works for now, it is what I use to read X posts. You do need an (or, better still, some) account(s) but those are easy to create for now. The account(s) don't need any history, freshly-minted free accounts do just fine.
You can have it use more than one account and more than one user can use the instance. Also, I do not use it to hide my occasional peek at an X thread linked to from some article from the X-man, I use it because it is at least 10 times faster than the lethargic drugged ground sloth that is the X site. I do not 'use' X (not Twitter before that) since I never considered the character-limited shout-your-blurb style it promotes to be fitting to what I want to say and how I want to say it. Nitter enables me to see what is said, quickly. I don't need more than that.
But you're still making specific requests with it from your IP, which will filter into metadata and metrics. It seems like Nitter loses its original value proposition once it's no longer a one-to-many proxy.
