Comment on Ask HN: What made you stop relying on tutorials?

I've never found tutorials to be very useful for learning to develop. I've always done better with reading documentation and experimenting. Tutorials tend to be more about showing you a specific method rather than learning the more general principles (getting you going quickly rather than fostering understanding).

I have occasionally found value in tutorials that show how to do specific things using specific tools, but I'm not using those as tutorials so much as walkthroughs.
