In my opinion, if you can't do these things, you're just cosplaying software engineering.

Not that I'm saying you're wrong about this; it was obvious even during my degree that "software engineers" were trying to have their cake and eat it with regards being counted as "being an engineer" without any of the real responsibility if the code you wrote was dangerously bad.
