Alcohol is definitely much, much, MUCH more harmful than sugar - especially when we consider alcohol itself contains extreme amounts of sugar. I'm talking more than soda.
Basically every culture is built around the consumption of carbohydrates, which are all similarly easy to absorb like sugar. Rice, Potatoes, Bread, it's all in the same category in my understanding. An easy source of burnable energy, easier to break down into the "right kind" of carbon rings than e.g. fat. The comparison is kinda weak, this is literally one of the pathways of our basic metabolism. Unlike alcohol, which has a complex and toxic pathway to get anywhere.
Sugar is not addictive nor is it "much more harmful than alcohol". No one out there is just eating spoons of sugar because of its addictive properties.
Your post about obesity doesn't imply it's all about sugar.
One of the reasons obesity is such an issue is because of the combination of sweet and savoury foods that are very calories dense and not very satiating.
Your “counterargument” supports the argument that you quoted though. People can't eat spoonfuls of sugar, but they can drink it when dissolved in flavorful, acidic water.
Except the part where where alcohol metabolizes into aldehyde species which cause double strand DNA breaks faster than we can repair them and we get moderate cancers ... but other than that it is great (ignoring the behavioral aberrations).
Your claim was: "Sugar is much more addictive and harmful than alcohol". I have no objection to the claim that obesity claims more lives than alcohol in the US.
Vast majority of adults consume alcohol in moderation, so clearly it is possible. It's really not that addictive if you don't have some physical or psychological predisposition to alcoholism.
I mean, it is. We give it a different name and highly control it, but if you're getting end of life treatment for cancer or whatever, they give you powerful pain relievers in the hospital, under tight control.

It's not bad in moderation. Sugar is much more addictive and harmful than alcohol, and it's also fine in moderation.

Says who?
Go check how much sugar is dissolved in soda, it’s more that a spoonful and ask yourself why? .

Please provide any scientific evidence of your claim.
USA deaths: mean estimate for obesity-attributable death was 324 940 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10546692/ USA deaths: About 178,000 (about 5% of all) yearly deaths from excessive alcohol occurred in 2020 and 2021 in the United States https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohols-effects-health/alcohol-to...
But I don’t think you get obesity just by eating sugar, you get diabetes. Obesity depends on other factors and eating habits doesn’t it?

Heroin is fine in moderation! /s
The thing is that it's impossible to moderate one's intake as, as you said, it's addictive.

Sorry, I was talking about sugar.
