They are compatible enough. It is a firefox vs internet explorer situation.

If you want to use shiny new ciphers, expect to have limited reach to those on legacy tools. Tradeoffs each user can make for themselves.

That is not an OpenPGP problem, that is just the nature of distributed systems.
