It is undeniably useful, and people who are denying this have no recollection of what it was like to learn to program for the first time. Anything that helps you surmount the brick wall difficulty curve of that first programming language is a godsend, and I can tell you this from having seen real motivated undergraduates in action during their CS degrees.
