Tariffs are a tool and they have their use. There's no reason to reject them entirely for ideological reasons (especially when the arguments against them are based on theories designed by David Ricardo more than two centuries ago, before the industrial revolution was even a thing).

But like all tools it must be used with care in order to have the desired effect. What we've seen with Trump so far is akin to smashing everything at reach with a hammer, it's not how hammers are supposed to be used…
