50 years ago, the mission profile was much simpler than it is today. For one, Starliner is reusable, which means a completely different set of materials and components for many elements of the system. Each and every Apollo capsule went straight to a museum after each use.

And if 50 years ago you mean the Shuttle, then that thing killed 2 crews. Not a shining beacon to emulate.
