Dammit. So I won’t be able to send and receive my personal domain emails through gmail anymore…?

The article is misleading. You can just implement SRS on your personal domain and it will work just fine. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Rewriting_Scheme for an overview of how it works.
