Unfortunately, many companies will get rid of their more-talented (but more expensive) employees to keep costs down short-term. Long-term, this will burn them exactly the way you'd expect.

Anecdotal/inference. I've seen quite a few posts on Twitter of people who were let go from high-paying/high-ranking positions surprised they've had trouble finding their next gig, too.
