Loki needs Promtail

Kibana needs Elasticsearch

I'm not sure if this has good enough log viewing https://github.com/kubernetes/dashboard

Yes, you need to install Loki+Promtail+Grafana. You can get it all with a single Helm chart, but it is definitely more work.

Personally I don't see the point of doing a little less work (still a Helm chart) to install Kubetail instead, if I'm trading search, metrics, and history.

Pedantic: Metrics would be +Prometheus as well

Fully agree with you though. The community has "moved on" to "deploy this YAML (helm chart) to your k8s cluster and configure it to your liking" as for "preferred packaging mechanism"

No, Loki can get metrics, out of the logs. That is what I am talking about: https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/query/metric_queries/
