I think we are about to see a huge resurgence in self hosting and returning to "old ways" that worked before subscriptions.

I've been seeing signs of that, a bit. Even my daughter, who is in no way any more computer-savvy than anyone else her age, asked me to help her self-host a number of things because she was fed up with subscriptions.
