Your point about pricing is well-taken. A lot of retail software 20-30 years ago used to cost hundreds of dollars which would be even more hundreds of dollars today between inflation and developers not getting any cheaper--the opposite in fact. (Turbo Pascal was this incredible pricing innovation because it only cost $50.) And upgrades were far from free.
