If boredom is causing distress, could the drugs taken to ease it be considered medical? That may be a really bad idea for robust mental health, but sadly that is sometimes true for the prescribed drugs as well.

To me it immediately connotes a recreational use, which is a useful distinction from purely medical (or pseudo-medical) applications.
So the word seems appropriate even if part of the familiar venacular.
