16 years ago, there were news stories about how Hurricane Katrina had erased New Orleans from the Earth and killed unknowable, but surely large, numbers of people while doing it.

They still had Mardi Gras next year, and the year after, and so on.

I suspect that you may have heard some exaggerations here, too.

I don't think it is that way for multiple reasons. One of them is that this tragedy is at global scale, and most poor countries don't even have access to enough vaccines even now. You can search for government comments from countries from South Asia and South-East Asia e.g. India, Indonesia etc on the subject of orphans due to COVID.
