I think there is a two fold answer.

1. The need for more outlets. 2. The belief this provided some protection.

Older homes had way fewer outlets than required by today’s code, and it wasn’t unusual to be short on plugs. Additionally, ungrounded plugs were also common. Enter the 6 plug surge protector.
