FOSS UNIX clones would never had mattered.

I am not sure about that. NT licenses weren't cheap back in the day, and Linux was $0. (And didn't come with baggage like a more expensive SKU to support more CPUs)

NT licenses were included in the computer price anyway. I was running NT during university, and eventually dual booting with Linux.
