After reading more into it, it seems that they are targeting co-working type spaces, not individuals in their hackathon efforts. Yes there are synchronous live online hackathons but the niche difference here is definitely individual hackers.

We are looking to bring together hackers, where-ever they are. Not just the ones who have a hackerspace nearby.
Didn't see this one before. It's a bit unfortunate but no showstopper. Stay tuned!
