Comment on Ask HN: HOW did YOU learn to program?

Comments

The thing that motivated me to really write programs on my own and experiment with them was the fact that the mIRC chat client had a built-in scripting language (a custom language, which in retrospect was a mixture of nutty and interesting). As a high school student who frequented IRC, writing some scripts for my client was a compelling use-case.

I had been briefly introduced to Logo and BASIC as a kid, though, in some sort of after-school program.
