Totally amused he threw Zed Shaw in there. From what I remember, Zed trashed several members of the rails core team, not the framework itself or even the entire community.
Surely they are just rewriting the slower core areas of the API in something faster/more distributed. There is no reason they'd have to rewrite the entire thing from scratch.
Zed certainly did trash the community. Take a look at
