Smaller teams have easier communication.

In computer science there is something called "Amdahl's law"[1] which shows how processing throughput slows as you add more CPU's mostly due to communications overhead. I suspect that large teams with low productivity are influenced by a similar effect. The great book, "The mythical man month" touched on this.

There are probably other human-related causes (like freeloaders and legal issues) too.
