Online Resources for Byte Code VMs

Recently there have been a lot of post on HN like "How to write a VM in C/Python/etc". Unfortunately they all seem to stop after implementing integer arithmetic which is the easiest part since you can load them directly into a register or put them on the stack. At the moment I'm struggling witth how to handle strings. I'm looking for something a little more in depth but digestible enough for a weekend project.
