Thanks for the sweet data! Could I ask for anyone who only knows "other languages", which ones do you mostly use? What sort of field are you in?

I use scripting languages almost exclusively ( I haven't written C in about 10 yrs). In order of preference, JavaScript, Python & PHP.

Science shop - most of our development is in perl (OO style), C and Fortran, with a smattering of whatever else we are saddled with.

Ruby, Hecl, Tcl, C, occasionally Javascript and other things like Erlang.

C#, Perl, a bit of scheme and lisp.

C#, Python, Javascript

I use Ruby (via Rails and HacketyHack) the most, but I also code in Haskell, C, Javascript, D... and some others, just not very often.

What's the argument? I run www.langpop.com, so I'm interested in these kinds of things.

Actually a bit of market research for a book. Trying to decide between two cover blurbs: "A programming background in Java or C++ is recommended." or "A background in object-oriented languages is recommended."

The book uses some Java and C++ comparisons when introducing new concepts.

Edit: Also, awesome site. Thanks for the link!

If the latter phrasing is correct, use that. If you really do need Java or C++ specifically, then use the former.
