Ask HN: Is getting a PMP certification a good idea?

I'm noticing a lot of overseas jobs, especially in the the Arab Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, etc.) require it for various project manager roles and, in turn, are paying about $100k a year.

Does anyone have any info on this? Does it carry the same weight in the US?
