Ask HN: How can I get involved in AI?

In the past few months I've become really interested in AI. I am a software developer with a background in mainly JavaScript and Python. Most recently I've been dabbling with Go and C.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is something that I would love to get involved in, though I have no idea how to go about it. I do not have any formal qualifications, though I have over 5 years of full time software development experience under my belt. What practical steps can I take to begin in this field? Is it feasible to undertake this without a degree or similar? any guidance that anyone could give would be much appreciated!
