Ask HN: VPN or PaaS for a Node.js application?

I'm working on a startup project and we're trying to decide where to host our node.js web application. I like the ease of use of some PaaS, but it seems like they are a little more expensive as you scale. Which is better, PaaS or VPS? What provider should I use?
